Today is World Food Day. Have you heard of it? Did you know it existed?
I believe it is a time to look farther away from where we are standing, and World Food Day is a good way to do that. There are so many people in the world who do not have access to clean water and consistent healthy food. We need to step away from our own circumstances and take a look around. Does the world reflect my values? Is the world view something I am proud of? Who is picking the vegetables I eat? Where do they come from? Do those people make a living wage? Do they have safe working conditions? Do I have access to clean water and consistent healthy food? Do I know what I am eating? Do I have rights relative to my food? These are all the questions that come to my mind when I think of the world and of food. My next question then leads me to take action. What can I do about it? Like I usually say to anyone who is starting out on a new venture or path; start where you are. Today is a good day to start. Do one thing today to make the world a better place . Eat one food today that you have not tried that is more nutritious. Buy one item or food today that is more sustainable or better for the planet. This is how we are able to make a change not only for ourselves but for the planet and all humankind. Before you buy the usual foods or household products, stop and think about who made it where it came from and do those people have clean water and food to eat. We here in the US are very blessed, extremely privileged, more and more uninformed and misinformed about our food. Take a stand for yourself and the world. Find out more about your food, what is in it and where it comes from.
